I'm a DirecTV customer and tuned into the Sweeney Todd/ Live from Lincoln Center broadcast last night on WETA. Before the demon barber of Fleet Street dispatched his first customer, DirecTV butchered the high definition program it said it was delivering by giving the data that this program needed to some other "more deserving" channel. The broadcast had complexity (many moving people) and its alleged HD reproduction just couldn't keep up. Aliasing, bars across cheeks and foreheads, soft definition of smaller faces and objects. It was truly painful to watch -- and I don't mean Sweeney's razor.
I don't know why those of us in broadcasting don't make a bigger deal out of our excellent HD reproduction in the face of dumbed down HD delivery by cable and satellite MVPDs. The only stations I get over the air are out of Hagerstown, Maryland, but when I can (Maryland Public TV wasn't running Sweeney), I'll chose over-the-air over DirecTV every time.
