Broadband Internet access has taken a commanding lead over dial-up in many US markets, according to new data from Nielsen//NetRatings. ¶ Affluent San Diego, always the leader, has 69.6 percent at-home broadband market penetration, followed closely by Phoenix, Detroit, New York, Sacramento, Orlando, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Boston -- all above 60 percent. This comes on top of findings announced in August that 51 percent of Internet users nationwide are connected via high-speed lines. ¶ The implications for publishers are twofold: "Fat" content (audio, video, and large photos) becomes more important in the mix, and frequency of visitation can rise because casual Internet usage becomes easier with an always-on connection. ...
