As I understand it HD has very limited data capabilities (song titles or text of that length) so it's hard to envision "exciting new applications".

DAB is a different story - but then that's only in Europe - and the fact that manufactures don't benefit from a single chip to cover various radios means they're less likely to add radio as a feature of their products.

I'm not familiar with data capacity in the European standard but I wouldn't be surprised if it were greater. However, that's not to say that the U.S. system is limited to Program Associated Data. At least two companies are planning to use HD Radio data to send traffic information to displays on mobile receivers. Surround sound audio is another application. There are more.
